Barrow, England: false claims, real damage
What happened
On 14 March 2023, at Preston Crown Court in England, a 22-year-old woman from Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria was jailed for eight and a half years. She had been found guilty in January 2023 of perverting the course of justice, after falsely claiming that men had drugged her, raped her and forced her into prostitution.
The Crown Prosecution Service's Senior Crown Prosecutor, Wendy Lloyd, said:
"These men were falsely accused of the most serious sexual abuse and exploitation."
The damage
Three of the men she accused attempted suicide while they were under suspicion. The judge said one of them had tried to kill himself in front of his family.
What it shows
Cases like this are rare. When they happen, they wreck lives on every side, and they make it harder for genuine victims to be believed. A clear record of what was agreed, made at the time, protects both people.
How ConsentIQ helps
ConsentIQ gives both people a clear record of what was agreed, made at the time. You start a session in your web browser and show a QR code. The other person scans it on their own phone, with no app or account, and records their own yes or no. You see one result on screen: consent granted, or not granted. The video is never sent to anyone, and it stays encrypted and private.
A no is recorded just as clearly, and respected. Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and a record doesn't guarantee any legal outcome.
